A road map to quality time with your children

Show Me How! Build Your Child's Self-Esteem Through Reading, Crafting and Cooking (Positive Parental Participation Series, Volume 1)More and more, my kids are coming home with paperwork from school that offer parent workshops and seminars on building your children's literacy skills, learning to read-aloud to your kids, and more! I think it's fantastic that they hold such seminars because as we all know, there isn't a guide to parenting and what one parent may find easy, others aren't just sure what to do. That's why when I found the book, Show Me How! Build Your Child's Self-Esteem Through Reading, Crafting and Cooking (Positive Parental Participation Series, Volume 1), my first reaction was, "What a great idea!"

The cool thing about this book is that the author, a former kindergarten teacher and day-care provider, believes that picture books are not only for entertainment and enjoyment, but can also be used to help children deal with the various issues they encounter in their formative years (ex: a new baby in the home). Kirkfield has formulated a program that pairs a particular picture book with a craft project and a cooking activity. And she pinpoints 100 picture books that every young child needs to hear!

Even better, the books chosen can most likely be found at your local library, the craft items are geared toward recycling items you probably already have on hand, and the recipes are pretty straightforward. There are such favorites as Little Toot, Mike Mulligan and the Steam Shovel, The Little Engine that Could, and more! Each book is listed along with a quick synopsis of the book and a positive parental participation note that sums up the lesson in the book. There is a section for notes and the easy to follow craft and recipe.

I can see this book being used regularly by parents to come up with activities to do with their children, and teachers and day-care providers to add to their curriculum. At the end of the book is a sample schedule that will help lay out your day and there are also recipes to make your own clay dough, edible fingerpaint and more!

This is a must-have for ALL parents and caretakers!
